This common website was created with the cooperation of a team of NGOs and Foundations in order to give, to any NGO that wishes, the possibility to search and locate other NGOs with same or similar aspirations, aiming at any type of cooperation, occasional or long-lasting.
On an international level, the concept of civil society is wide and becomes wider every day. The United Nations and other big international organizations all agree to encourage its use. On an institutional level, civil society is expressed by Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs), that is organizations that defend lasting values and consist of, some times, demands for the protection of common goods such as the environment, volunteerism, etc.
The NGOs do not belong to the sphere of the markets. In many cases they strongly criticize state bureaucracy for its actions and omissions when they think that the management is indifferent to the generation of “social quality” goods which concern the common citizen.
As NGOs are increasingly recognized as factors that highlight the systemic weaknesses of democracy, they try to contribute to the formation of policy, decision-making and the responsibility of its implementation, and the rating of results in important areas of social life, as are for example justice, education, the environment etc. Issues that have to do with the policies of the European Union are now mentioned among the targets of various NGOs and Centres of Study and Research. In this way, other common denominators of interests and activities are found.
These thoughts, however, in order to produce some results, need to acquire what in Physics is called “critical mass”, ie a minimum size, in this case a minimum response from society, so that the government and other political forces pay attention, only then will they feel the need to listen and discuss seriously. Because our objective, the main priority, must be a serious public discussion.
The collaborating NGOs, with their members, their activities, and their informative announcements can provide this “critical mass” so that in the end the necessary involvement of the media can be achieved.
We took the initiative to create a special website in which any interested NGO can have immediate access in order to publicise their activities and to invite other NGOs to cooperate in a specific or more general way. The NGOs will be able to answer either through the website or by conventional means of communication. We estimate that this website, worked on by a NGO with an already established website will be producing results in a year or less.
All NGOs are invited to make free use of the website ngo.gr as a means of communication and cooperation with other NGOs of their choice, with the expected benefits being mutual but mainly social and national.
The hope is that a lot will be achieved with this opportunity that is presented by this initiative of the Citizens´ Movement for an Open Society.
